Trace International

Trace International wanted to provide people who did not know about their products, services, and initiatives with an experience that would help them easily find this information.  

Interviews and card sorting

Along with two other designers, I initially tasked 5 individuals with going to Trace’s website and finding information about its mission, services, and initiatives; they had difficulty. They wanted a “quick overview” of Trace, but were instead overwhelmed by “blocks of text”.


To develop a clearer navigation, my team and I had 9 people sort cards containing the names of the Trace website’s pages, in a way that made sense to them. They organized the cards by what Trace does and offers, which helped my team consolidate categories that were initially confusing.

New navigation categories

We simplified Trace’s navigation to one that featured categories based on our card sorts.

We presented Trace’s services in a simple and clear message.

We strived to create an experience that would not overwhelm Trace’s users with information.

Usability Testing

My team and I tested the usability of our redesign with people one-on-one and learned that there was still some confusion regarding what terms like “Compendium” or “Matrix” meant, which we were still using in our new navigation.


What I Learned

  • A next iteration should define terms such as “Compendium” and “Matrix” within the dropdown menus

  • Longer term, Trace’s website could offer a glossary or Frequently Asked Questions page to help inform people who know little about the compliance industry
